When we are writing articles for our websites we want people to read them. We want people who are searching for topics we are covering to find their way to our site. Most people find websites through search engines. With the majority doing searches on Google. So it is important to discover how Google sees your articles.
When we are writing articles we need to write them so they are useful to the reader. We also make sure that they get written in such a way that the search engines understand them. There are many articles about writing and “On-Page SEO” but how do we know how Google sees our articles?
Google does not have an army of people reading articles and categorizing them. Google works via an algorithm where the Google crawler visits your site. The crawler then identifies what each page is about and ranks them via the algorithm. The way Google ranks pages is always changing but it is important for us to know how Google sees our work.
On-Page SEO
If you are using WordPress then you should use an SEO plugin to guide your On-Page SEO. We recommend Yoast SEO as it will help you identify and fix problems with your content. You add the word or phrase you would like the article to rank for and the plugin will tell you what to do.
How Google Sees You Content
There is an easy way to find out how Google sees your content and what it will rank for. This is Google Keyword Planner. A lot of people use Google Keyword Planner for keyword research before they write an article. You can also use it in reverse. You need to sign up for a Google Adwords account to use Keyword Planner. This is free and you don’t need to use AdWords.
Once in Keyword Planner click “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category”. Then add your article URL in “Your landing page” then click “Get Ideas”. The tool will then return the keywords that Google suggest you advertise for. Of course, these words and phrases are related to what Google has categorized as the topic.
For example, if I enter the URL for one of the articles on this site I should get words related to the topic. I entered the article “How To Write Better Content For Your Website”. The results are below.
As you see the first results include “content writing, copywriter, article writing and writing for the web”. All the topics are closely related to the article. This means that Google is seeing my article exactly as I wanted. If the results were completely off topic I would have to look at the content and revise it.
Using a tool to help with your On-Page SEO and then testing the results is important. You can spend a lot of time and money creating content so taking a few minutes to test is time well spent. Check out the Google Keyword Planner tool and use it to see how Google sees your articles.
